Thanks to all of our readers who’ve been in touch since the hurricane. Last Sunday we prepared the office for flooding, and during the storm the Gowanus did overflow its banks, but luckily it left the One Story office dry. Friends of ours in the neighborhood and around New York City, however, did not fare so well. Please consider donating or volunteering some time and help get New York back on its feet: WNYC has done a great job explaining where and how to give aid. Red Hook Recovers has been organizing recovery for the Red Hook area of Brooklyn. Occupy Sandy has been posting lots of info about volunteering and donations in different boroughs. You can also follow them on twitter for updates. The Park Slope Armory is being used as an Emergency Shelter for people without power or who have lost homes. NYC Service is another great site for getting information on how to help. The Food Bank for New York City gets free food to those who need it. The Red Cross has also been taking donations for disaster victims across the Eastern Seaboard. And finally, our friends at Powerhouse Arena Bookstore in DUMBO, who have hosted many One Story events and helped our authors launch their books, was completely flooded. They are having a fundraiser/bookbuying event on Nov. 17th. Please come and buy your holiday books and help this wonderful bookstore get back on its feet. If anyone has any additional sites/places/suggestions, comment below. Good luck and stay safe.
