In-Person Generative Fiction Class

With Managing Editor Lena Valencia

(no class on July 4th)
Application Fee: $10
Price: $425

Sometimes the hardest part about sitting down to write can be the sitting down part. With all the obligations and distractions of everyday life, finding the time to focus on your own work is a challenge in itself.

This ten-person generative class is designed for writers who are looking to restore that time. Over five weeks in our office in Brooklyn, One Story Managing Editor Lena Valencia will help writers create new work through a series of prompts, lectures, and discussions. In addition to the in-class exercises, Valencia will provide writers with tips for maintaining a sustainable writing practice. Each two-hour session will focus on a different narrative form or craft element. The goal is to leave the class with a notebook full of fresh starts and prompts that you can use well into the future. The class will meet weekly on Thursday nights from 7pm - 9pm. There will be no class on July 4th.

Because the writing that takes place in class will be in draft form, there will be no workshop element or instructor feedback, though students will be encouraged to read their work aloud. There will also be no homework, though optional reading will be assigned. This generative class is geared toward fiction writers; however there will be a handful of creative nonfiction exercises included, as well.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to jumpstart your creative process with an intimate group of motivated writers!

Lena Valencia is the managing editor of One Story. She’s taught at The New School, Sackett Street Writers Workshop, and Catapult.
